Stuck on this quilt

Is it still a WIP if I can't figure out what's wrong to start working on it again?  I started this quilt many months ago, I love the fabrics and I also love the idea of this pattern by Sew Kind of Wonderful.  Now as you may be able to tell I really want to work on it but there is something about it that doesn't seem right.

Each time I unroll it in an effort to work on it I just feel something's off.   When I sent the above picture with this question to my daughter she suggested I start by removing one of the fabrics,  she said the stripe was distracting.

That was more than a month ago and I'm itching to work on it, I'm not one to have multiple outstanding projects laying around.  I discussed it at last weekends guild meeting, it was suggested by one I take a rotary cutter to it and slice it up its fun, say WHAT?  Chopping it into an abstract doesn't work for me although I appreciated the feedback.  To be fair I have never posted pictures of this anywhere so unless you know the pattern called Metro Rings it's just an open question.

After I finish each project I unroll it for a couple days to ponder what to do next, take it apart, make changes or keep going.  Then a bit sad I roll it up again and start something else, I'm so glad I made my design board with 2 layers, I do believe out of site is out of mind so I always roll it so I can still see the pretty fabrics peeking over the top. Maybe after this project I will decide what to do, off to work on the Michael Miller Challenge.

Linking up with WIP at Freshly Pieced

I am also linking up with Sew Fresh Quilts by my blogger friend Lorna, her message today is inspiring especially if you have ever joined an on line contest.

  1. I wouldn't like to take these apart! The stripes don't seem to fit just yet. When you add the black to intersection you'll get a different feeling out of it. Can you possibly use the stripes for binding to pull it together later on?

    1. Great minds I guess, yes all the stripes have been replaced and I am holding it for binding maybe. Still a little too busy feeling so it stays a WIP thanks for the input

  2. I love this take! It's going on Pinterest for me to have as a reference and example of another cool variation! I sort of ignored the seems that didn't line up. I have other quilts where I knock myself silly ripping "unsightly" and off ones out...only to end up hating the quilt! Quilts are like Life. Some things line up and can go with the perfect flow and others are there to challenge us to let go and move on!

Love your double design wall idea! Will be remembering that one for when I make one.

Another thought is to email Jen Pedigo and ask her for her insight and thoughts on this design...she is super sweet and would be able to give a unique perspective on your dilemma.

Good luck and I hope you get it to the point of working on it to completion!

    1. I didn't remove any because they didn't line up, I have the same thoughts on the seam ripper. Love Jen, met her and her sister when they came to town for a show that's why I wanted to make this quilt

The trick to the second layer of the design wall are the over the door wreath hangers (for Christmas Wreaths) and a dowel rod for the top layer.

  3. Well, I must not have a great sense of what works. Because I like all your blocks in the Metro Rings, as is. Looking forward to seeing your progress on the Michael Miller challenge. I just finally got my fabrics last week. And that is my next project to work on too!

  4. I really like how you have used solids in the corners to balance the prints. Could it be that the black smaller offset corners are too dark? Maybe a black and a grey together to soften that edge? I am with you; don't cut those up, they are lovely! Good luck finding your sewjo again with this project!

  5. I like it- I like the stripes too! Maybe the use of white on the corners is what's throwing it off. Maybe add some black to the corners so that when the blocks come together you don't have all white (does that make sense). That's the only thing I can think of! And yes, don't cut them! Good luck!

  6. You can do it! If it was me, I would minimize the number of colors to keep the busy-ness to a minimum, maybe stick with the pinks and purples, but pull out the yellow/green.

  7. Thank you all for the great suggestions, time to ponder. I know how I quilt it will make a difference, I just want to have a pretty quilt even if it becomes a "Learning Curve" which will be its title on the label once complete. Always looking forwards

  8. hmm..this is a bit tough Pam. I do agree with you that something is not quite there... So when I look at the photo, my eyes goes to that light gray (that is in between the two arches) - that gives my eye a bit of a resting spot...so maybe if you use that light gray in all of those shapes? Or light gray and one more, like ...white? Then also you might try to arrange blocks so that those light gray shapes go in diagonal lines, in one direction and white in another? Hope this makes sense... I feel that as dynamic as this is, it sort of needs "direction" of movement? Love pondering these things!! (can you tell? ha ha)
