Let me Bee Queen

In September I was queen for two different bees, Do Good Stitches and WNY MQG.  Before each of them started I posted the blocks I wanted for each with tutorials, DGS here and WNY MQG here.  I have received all my blocks for DGS and only have a few stragglers for WNY MQG. 

I am very happy to post the finished quilt for Do. Good Stitches which is a charity bee, I will be mailing it to Wrap Them in Love this week.

You never know how everyones blocks made from the stash they already have on hand will mix together.  I gave them a lot of options on colors and I think they came together fantastically!

I did place two on the back, one person sent me 3 and one of them was an exact double!

Of course a pocket was added to the corner with the logo patch I was sent from our leader.  I added a few borders to increase the size of the original patch, then the pocket is doubled with a split thin layer of batting and quilted before adding to the back when finishing the binding.  I made a card to insert into the pocket for the receipent, just warm wishes.

The blocks I received from WNY MQG are in the planning stage on my design wall.  Once I receive the last 6 (3 sets). I will make them into a couple of baby quilts.

Meeting Jacquie

 

Over the weekend I attended a class by Jacquie Gering on her Stitch and Flip Super Nova, such a good class~ Thank you Jacquie!  Her organic quilting style is the reason I gravatated to the modern side of quilting over traditional.  When I found out she was visiting WNY I signed up (before I had a surgery date) this was a class I didn't want to miss.  Hosted by our local quilt shop they provided all of the sewing machines, irons, fabric packets in a variety of colors and lunch.

 

One of my first book purchases was Jacquie and Katie's Quilting Modern, the Supernova quilt was one of the chapters I liked.  Jacquie's instructions and answers to our questions were honest with an underlying message to make every quilt your own no matter what the pattern, even mistakes can become a great block.  What I was not surprised by is how genuinely nice and REAL she was, what I mean is she was great about meeting everyone in the class and making sure they were comfortable with her method.  

I stayed as long as I could but the constant up and down was rough on my knee, even with ice it eventually became too much.  I didnt leave before I got all the information I needed and asked Jacquie many questions. I brought my project home and put it up on my design wall,  I may be changing at least one of the prints, I hate poka dots and the pink and green ones seem to be screaming at me.  It is also great to be home at my sewing machine, at the correct height with my extended table. Now to make it my own

Patchwork Log Cabin ~ wait-what?

Last week I posted the fabrics for a chocolate quilt I have been contemplating 

I had the idea of a patchwork log cabin combo, yea I know sounds weird.  I did a little EQ7 play and was convinced it would work so

I started cutting up my blocks.

These are the curtains in the bedroom that this gift will go.  I knew I wanted to add blue, not a whole block of it.  This is what I came up with, just a sliver on different blocks, not overwhelming just a bit of color.  My thinking was if I made one of the squares blue it would look like polkadots, not what I wanted, do you think it works?

Once I started putting the blocks together I knew I accomplished my goal on every point. Each of the blocks will finish at 20" square (20 1/2" unfinished). For a king size quilt I need to make 24 blocks plus maybe a border. 

I got all of this done in one day, yes I am back to sewing!

Photo tutorial

For my WNY MQG BEE I picked a tutorial from Missouri Star Quilt company- I LOVE JENNY! I picked the Disappearing Pinwheel Friendship Star. 

 

I got word the video tutorial wasn't very clear so here is a step by step in photos, guild members if you have questions send me an email.  Well the best way to share it with everyone is to post it on my blog.

 

Using two 10" squares, one being a fun print and one Kona White Cotton 

Next put them together with the good sides to the middle

 

 

Stitch all the way around the outside 1/4" seam

I traditionally use a scant 1/4"

Cut both ways point to point  

 

~Press ~
Open them and lay them out to form a pinwheel- make sure it is

spinning the correct way

NOTE at this point it measures about 13 1/2"

 

Sew them together and press again

 

The size is about 13" - I square it up to 12 3/4" to make the

1/3 measurements easier
 

 

Cut into 1/3 both ways - you will make 2 cuts each

way measuring 4 1/4"

At this point I'm going to suggest looking at the pieces like a

puzzle and put them in the correct order

(the whole spin/ turn mumbo confused me)





View from the back

Sew them together in rows - press so the

seams on each row will go together

and press again - ta-done

the final size will be between 11 1/2 - 12"

All the blocks collected will be grouped into 2 sets of 9 to make two infant quilts for WNY Newborns in Need.  Thank you for your bee blocks for this charity.

Now for my questions

1. What are you working on?
As many know I am forced to take a little break due to surgery but have much in progress.

I was able to make a couple bee blocks I posted last week, now I am cutting squares for a brown quilt, thinking patchwork with a log cabin twist.

Then there is another idea floating for a Christmas quilt.  So I am currently collecting reds due to this recent issue

I will also be making for my niece a quilt from fabric she purchased on her honeymoon in Hawaii.  It's beautiful fabrics (that I cant share- sorry) I haven't decided on a pattern yet that will do the fabrics justice, but I will

2. How does my work differ from others

All I can say is we can all have the same pattern or materials and mine will be a little different.  I cant help it, I cant follow a pattern exactly, at least I haven't so far.

I have seen this pattern many times and when I made it I had to use more muted colors and add the hearts inside the stuffing.

Our Modern Quilt Guild hosted a feather swap, I am not sure what others planned with theirs but yea, mines different.  I was at the point of quilting it just before surgery, I dont want to hurry this one, I am loving it.

Why do I do what I do?

I started quilting after retirement, many things I did for fun were no longer physically possible.  After my first visit to a quilt shop I was hooked, what else can I say. This makes me happy and quilting for charity is a plus.

How does my creative process work?

As a new quilter everything inspires me to at least try it.  I am still like a little kid who keeps saying "I wanna try that - ooOoo I want to try that too!  I keep finding new things to try and do.  As for my blog, if I find a way that works for me I share it.
